Frank Leahy was an accomplished athlete in baseball, basketball, and boxing. His talents as a coach overshadowed his athletic career. He was the head football coach at Notre Dame. He was known as "The Master".

Leahy coached at Notre Dame for 11 years, from 1941-1943, and 1946-1953. He had six unbeaten football teams. Two of his teams were undefeated and untied. Four of Leahy's squads won National Championships and split one championship title in 1953. His record of thirty-nine straight, undefeated games still stands as a Notre Dame record.

Leahy molded his players to the pinnacle of their performance level. He had four Heisman trophy winners during his tenure (Angelo Bertelli, John Lujack, Leon Hart, and Johnny Lattner.) He was also responsible for recruiting Paul Hornung who was to be Notre Dame's fifth Heisman Trophy winner.

Leahy shaped thirty-eight athletes who were named "All-Americans". He had two Outland Trophy winners (George Connor-1946 and Bill Fischer-1948) and twelve of his players went on to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Coach Leahy's overall college football record was 107 wins, 13 losses, and 9 ties. He is second on the NCAA all time winning percentage list, just five points behind his mentor, the immortal Knute Rockne.

The Master believed there was only one way to play football. You won the game. You won the game by being better than your opponents. You worked harder and longer and disciplined yourself into better shape than anyone you played. If you loved to play football, the sacrifice was not work at all .
